The Three Houston-Specific Challenges
Challenge 1: Heat
Houston's summers are brutal. Average high temperatures sit above 90°F from June through September, with heat index values regularly exceeding 105°F. Artificial turf in direct sun absorbs heat, and surface temperatures can run 20–40°F above air temperature on a clear day.
What this means for product selection: look for turf with lighter blade coloration (natural green blends rather than dark, saturated greens), and consider infill products specifically formulated to reduce heat retention. Placement matters too — turf under pergolas, shade sails, or tree canopy stays dramatically cooler.
Challenge 2: Drainage
Houston receives an average of 50 inches of rain per year and regularly experiences sudden, intense downpours. Poor drainage in an artificial turf installation means standing water, base erosion, and a soggy surface that takes days to dry out.
Good drainage starts with the backing. Look for turf products with hole-punched or flow-through backing rather than a simple flat backing. More importantly, the base preparation under the turf is what makes or breaks drainage in Houston. Crushed granite compacted to the right depth, with appropriate slope and grading, moves water away from the surface efficiently.
This is one area where we've seen a lot of cheaper installations fail. Cutting corners on base depth — especially in Houston's clay soil — leads to drainage problems that no amount of good turf product can overcome.
Challenge 3: UV Exposure
Texas sun is intense year-round. UV exposure degrades turf fibers over time, causing fading and brittleness. The difference between a quality turf product and a budget option often comes down to UV stabilization in the fiber manufacturing process.
Quality turf products will specify UV stabilization in their product data sheets. Ask your installer about the warranty coverage for color retention — a good product should maintain its color for 8–10+ years under Texas sun conditions.
What to Look for in a Houston Turf Product

• Face weight of 60–80 oz per square yard — heavier fibers hold up better in high-traffic areas and resist compaction
• Pile height of 1.5–2 inches — shorter piles stay cooler and are easier to maintain; longer piles look more natural but trap more heat
• Nylon Fiber - If turf melt is a concern, nylon is your best option. It has a much higher melt point than polyethylene fiber, but it comes at a higher cost.
• Polyethylene fiber — softer than nylon, more heat-tolerant than polypropylene, and the most common choice for residential lawns
• Perforated or flow-through backing — essential for Houston's rainfall
• UV stabilization rated for 10+ years
The Base Matters More Than the Turf Product
We tell every Houston homeowner the same thing: the turf product is important, but the base is what determines how your installation performs over time. A premium turf product on a poor base will look bad and drain poorly within a year. A good-quality turf on a properly prepared base will look great and perform flawlessly for 15+ years.
